Nine hundred students and seventeen teachers attend the primary school of Haben, Gulomekada District, Tigray Region, Ethiopia.
The school, in operation for forty years, is the only educational reference for all the children of the area; during wartime, the facility, sheltering the Eritrean soldiers, suffered from heavy damages. The priority of the school’s students was the availability of potable water.
Mariagrazia and Luca Anicito, living in Paternò (Sicily) and parents of Samuele, a sixteen-year-old boy who recently decided to take his life off, financed the complete rehabilitation of the existing dry well within the school compound. Its rehabilitation consisted of removing the old pipings and replacing them with new ones at a depth exceeding the underwater level. A new hand-operated pump has been installed to provide all the students with fresh water. The well, duly fenced to regulate the water distribution, was officially opened on February 5, 2024.
